Baseball, business, travel, fun loving and college football describe Steven Cornett. He has lived in Hall County on and off his entire life and is a 2002 graduate of Gainesville High school as a student athlete.  After graduating from GHS, Steven went on to play the sport that he loves, baseball, in college, at the University of West Georgia and at the University of Augusta. Throughout college, Steven learned to love the business side of things but couldn’t quite figure out what exactly he wanted to do with his degree, being that he missed baseball and wanted to be involved with the sport somehow.
He found out that GHS needed a marketing teacher and an assistant baseball coach. This opportunity was perfect and gave him exactly what he wanted, business and baseball. Beyond being a teacher and a coach, Steven loves traveling and seeing other cultures. He has been all over to world with his wife Shelly.
This project, the Faces of Hall County, stemmed from conversations on a golf trip to Saint Simons Island between Brad Abernathy and Steven Cornett.  “Steven Cornett was instrumental in the inception of The Faces of Hall County project,” says Brad Abernathy.
Question: What inspired or led you to your current career?
Answer: “I have been around baseball my entire life, and once I finished playing college ball, I missed it. I also have always enjoyed the business side of things, so teaching and coaching baseball seemed to be a good fit.”
Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Hall County, and what do you love there?
A: “You can never go wrong with a little Recess chicken fingers… once you try them you will never get another item on the menu.”
Q: How long have you lived or worked in Hall County?
A: “I have lived in Hall County on and off for my whole life.”
Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in Hall County?
A: “George Groover. He is the man. I love his heart and support for the Gainesville baseball team.”
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And why?
A: “I would definitely travel somewhere that I have never been to before such as Bora Bora. As some of you might know, I am a big world traveler and Bora Bora seems like a neat place to sit back, relax and enjoy myself with my family.”
Q: What is your favorite movie OR what is the first movie you remember seeing in a theater?
A: “My favorite movie would have to be ‘A Land Before Time.’ Not because it was a great movie, but because I went to go see it with my mom, and after the movie was over, we walked outside and noticed that our car was still running…. With the keys locked inside of it. This was one of my more memorable times of my childhood.”
Q: What advice would you give to a crowd of people?
A: “I would say to be different, because being normal is no fun”
Q: What is something on your bucket list?
A: “My wife and I have always wanted to go on vacation to Bora Bora. We would love to stay in one of the many over water bungalows facing Mount Otemanu.”
Q: What is your favorite music/ three bands you would like to see (dead or alive)?
A: “Bob Marley is a must see, The Beetles and Wide Spread Panic.”
Q: What former local business makes you the most nostalgic about Hall County?
A: “I would have to say Archie’s Sporting Goods. When I see that name, I automatically think of Gainesville.”
Q: Choosing any non-relative: with whom would you love to have lunch?  Where locally?
A: “Bob Marley. I enjoy his music and would love to see his personality in person. I’d have lunch with him on a boat somewhere in the middle of Lake Lanier.”
Q: What is your favorite thing about Hall County?
A: “My favorite thing about Hall County is the people and how everybody knows each other. That could be a good thing, or a bad thing, and some people hate it, but in my opinion it is really neat.”
Q: Where do you see yourself in five or 10 years?
A: “I hope to still be alive, doing whatever and wherever the world takes me. As long as I am with my wife, near my friends, and my family, I think that I will be OK.”
Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
A: “I am a professional rapper… just kidding! But I have been asked to rap at multiple weddings.”
