Billy Martin Drive is the latest road in Gainesville to be renamed to honor former Gainesville High football legend Billy Martin. Billy Martin Drive is located at the rear entrance of City Park off of Glenwood Drive in Gainesville. Billy Martin was famously known for playing high school football at Gainesville High, Georgia Tech and in the NFL.
He played for the Chicago Bears, the Atlanta Falcons 1966 expansion team and the Minnesota Vikings.
Former GHS baseball coach Wayne Vickery remembers Martin fondly.
“(He was) one of the finest athletes to ever wear the red and white. I used to call him ‘The Gentle Giant!'” Vickery said.
Martin died in Cumming on March 14, 2018 and was 75.
